Pan in on a widowed mother and her six year old son with an already wild imagination. Add in a manifestation of the psychological trauma and what creeps up from the dark recesses of the mind, and this boogeyman appears in your life. Coming up from the basement (where the grief had been repressed during her denial), it threatened pretty much every aspect of her life. They didn’t sleep well, they were having extreme delusions and hallucinations. The movie focused so deeply on the fact that she had to come to her senses if she were to protect her son and take care of him. It was deeply moving. It’s not recommended for anybody who might be triggered by scenes dealing with how abusive the mother had gotten when she was in the deep grips of it.
